Discussion:
[xcat-user] The logo of xCAT

Several weeks ago we had some discussion to make a new logo for xCAT. Now
we got a new one in this page (http://xcat.org/index2.html), you can
compare it with the current one here (http://xcat.org/)

Someone thought the new one is too cute. What's your opinion?

I remember someone preferred the current logo, so maybe we can just refine
it to make it more modern?

Thanks

There was more than one who preferred the current logo - I was one of them...

What's wrong with the current one - just call it retro ;-)

I second what Rich said. While the cat itself is cartoonish, the name looks alright. What's the urgency about changing the logo? If anything, possibly look at cleaning up the existing logo a bit. Another idea might be to use the old ascii art cat. Maybe capture an image of that, convert it to vector and resize it.

I agree with Christian - I think the name looks alright with the new one.
Or a 3D type image?? - or java where the old logo morphs into
a cool new image (not the proposed hell(o) kitty ;-))

I don't care that much about the logo since I rarely ever see it. This seems like the sort of thing that warrants submissions and voting, one of which would be existing logo.

In general, when I hear folks feeling a need of new logo, it's thinking it's not 'professional' enough and looks more ominous than they like and that it's not what they want in a presentation to others. My perspective is if a company is uncomfortable, applying their own branding resources to their own packaging would be a way to go if they want a logo, just not 'upstream's logo. Besides cosmetic improvements, I also think there's an opportunity for more targeted downloads and documentation (e.g. a Lenovo repository would include the non-free utilities that back 'piflash' and 'pasu' without further effort, and also may offer documentation that skips over HMC and FSP and such to focus on the things our users that aren't already comfortable with xCAT are not likely to care about in their 'getting to know it' phase).

But in terms of the upstream logo, I could see something with a simple/flat color scheme/pattern cleaner edges and maybe not use bones. But my opinion is pretty weak since aside from questions about the logo itself, I haven't given the logo a second thought in a very very long time. The stylized x in the new logo doesn't seem too shabby, not personally a fan of the C. Probably be consistently sans-serif for the whole thing to match the x. The cat itself... I trend toward it being too cute but also don't have much suggestion on that front.

Another idea might be to use the old ascii art cat.
Got an example of that handy? I don't find it off-hand as an xCAT
newbie (hidden someplace in the sources maybe?). Some ASCII art would
be timeless and indeed is fit for an administration toolkit for mostly
headless systems where the text console is the way to interact with
them.

Why was the old logo dropped? Was ASCII art _not_ cool at some point in
time? ;-)

I believe the old ascii cat still pops up when running genimage or booting a stateless system. If so, I can try to capture it this week since I'll be doing that. Otherwise, someone else on the list might be able to grab it quicker.

Ah, thanks. OK, that's a ASCII approximation of the graphical logo with
lots of resolution. For a logo, I thought about a more stylised version
with much less characters, in around 3 lines or so, the classic art of
expressing something with very few well-chosen characters. I'd still put
the name xCAT alongside/below such an ASCII-art logo, of course.

You couldn't resist;-)

Yeah, resorting to the wealth of Unicode does take the point out of
ASCII art. I know I'm way behind the times by not using
$some_smiley_codepoint instead of;-)

The classic logo with a more modern look, replacing the bones with some
less fatal kind of X (perhaps some arrows to indicate the distribution
of information) and a more stylised cat in front might have a chance.

I'm rather ambivalent about the old logo, I hazily recall wondering if it
wasn't too, er, extreme, when it was first seen, but got over that quickly
enough, and for the last 5-6 years haven't thought much about it, either.

That said, it's miles ahead of the proposed logo, IMNSHO. That one I
actively dislike. To echo Jarrod though, I probably would quit seeing it
soon enough. I do like the idea of formalizing this, getting more
submissions and setting up a vote.

Thanks for all of your comments.

Don't worry, the logo won't be replaced without getting general acceptance
for the new logo.

Looks like the new logo has been rejected. I'll try to get someone to
refine the old logo, and get back to you then.

Perhaps we could discuss a different name? Seems like we're controting ourselves to inlcude the 'x' when it's really unnecessary. Maybe instead of "extreme", which is kind of dated, we could use a cool buzz word like "scalable".

Scalable
Cluster/Cloud
Administration
Toolkit

How's that for an accronym? ;-)

Hear, hear! sCAT, or scat: appeals to both jazz aficionados, and wildlife biologists!

Perhaps we could discuss a different name? Seems like we're controting ourselves to inlcude the 'x' when it's really unnecessary. Maybe instead of "extreme", which is kind of dated, we could use a cool buzz word like "scalable".

How's that for an accronym? ;-)

I'm rather ambivalent about the old logo, I hazily recall wondering if it wasn't too, er, extreme, when it was first seen, but got over that quickly enough, and for the last 5-6 years haven't thought much about it, either.
That said, it's miles ahead of the proposed logo, IMNSHO. That one I actively dislike. To echo Jarrod though, I probably would quit seeing it soon enough. I do like the idea of formalizing this, getting more submissions and setting up a vote.

I agree with Rich and Christian, I like the old logo, but needs a bit of work,. Unfortunately for me, the new one doesn't seem to catch me

I believe the old ascii cat still pops up when running genimage or booting a stateless system.
Not seeing it during boot (using replaycons) on our stateless systems.
Alrighty then,
Thomas

To a British English speaker the first definition of scat that comes to mind is: http://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/scat#scat_4; do you really want to call your product "rabbit sh*t" ?

Not to mention the doens of files with xcat in the name in the product. Whilst I may rarely if ever see the logo I see the name every day.

Mark

Also, it's the x as in Unix (trademark or not), plus the command cat. I
understood xCAT to mean `cat < $UNIX_LIKE_SYSTEM > $CLUSTER`.

Well, in an ideal world you would use the Hello Kitty logo because it
turns out that although everyone thinks its a kitten it's actually a
drawing of a British public school girl [1] therefore making Hello
Kitty ... an ex-cat!

Well, in an ideal world you would use the Hello Kitty logo because it
turns out that although everyone thinks its a kitten it's actually a
drawing of a British public school girl [1] therefore making Hello
Kitty ... an ex-cat!

Not to mention the doens of files with xcat in the name in the product. Whilst I may rarely if ever see the logo I see the name every day.
Also, it's the x as in Unix (trademark or not), plus the command cat. I understood xCAT to mean `cat < $UNIX_LIKE_SYSTEM > $CLUSTER`.

Let's not forget that Github has a recognizable cute cat logo, and any
other cute cat logo will probably get overshadowed by it. (I'm not even
going down the `hello kitty` route...)

As for a rename to the Scalable CAT, how's this for a logo:

FWIW, There is another tool already called SCAT! It is the "Simple

Personally, I'd prefer if you not take my name!

Perhaps we could discuss a different name? Seems like we're controting
ourselves to inlcude the 'x' when it's really unnecessary. Maybe instead of
"extreme", which is kind of dated, we could use a cool buzz word like
"scalable".

I'm rather ambivalent about the old logo, I hazily recall wondering if it
wasn't too, er, extreme, when it was first seen, but got over that quickly
enough, and for the last 5-6 years haven't thought much about it, either.
Post by Christian Caruthers
That said, it's miles ahead of the proposed logo, IMNSHO. That one I
actively dislike. To echo Jarrod though, I probably would quit seeing it soon
enough. I do like the idea of formalizing this, getting more submissions and
setting up a vote.

I agree with Rich and Christian, I like the old logo, but needs a bit
of work,. Unfortunately for me, the new one doesn't seem to catch me

I believe the old ascii cat still pops up when running genimage or booting a
stateless system.

Not seeing it during boot (using replaycons) on our stateless systems.
Alrighty then,

Actually, the graphical cat was the first logo. Vallard made the ascii art logo for injection into stateless image boot sequence. I haven't seen it in a while, but wasn't paying close attention either.

Another idea might be to use the old ascii art cat.
Got an example of that handy? I don't find it off-hand as an xCAT newbie (hidden someplace in the sources maybe?). Some ASCII art would be timeless and indeed is fit for an administration toolkit for mostly headless systems where the text console is the way to interact with them.

Why was the old logo dropped? Was ASCII art _not_ cool at some point in time? ;-)

Someone thought the new one is too cute. What's your opinion?
Well, if it has to show a cute cat, it should show one entangled in a
cluster (of network cables), showing a certain air of playful
seriousness while still looking as if it were still the master of
it all. Sort of.

If it shouldn't be too graphic, well, the new cat's look seems about
right, supervisor-style, but the integration with the logo via the
tail-C doesn't really work for me.

The old one looks rather drastic. But the graphical idea of having the
X combined with a cat works nicely. I just wouldn't use bones for the
X, as this is not a pirate cat, but more a superhero cluster manager.

So, what about the serious looking cat face with some kind of superhero
mask shaped like an X (well, not trying to borrow too much from the
X-Men, but that comes to mind when thinking of the X-Cat).
